Review: The most important work in the study of social stratification, social hierarchy and the reproduction of these hierarchies in the educational institutions that I have know about. His analysis of the "collusion" between faculty and students in maintaining misunderstanding should be read in the context of several other books in Bourdieu's series on educational studies. These all are based and include data from far ranging empirical study.
This may be the one book I would want every college and university teacher/professor to read, especially those teaching in the social sciences and the humanities.

Review: This book is an absolute must read for anyone interested in equity issues in higher education. It's a classic. Bourdieu is not as well known in the US as he should be.

Review: Bourdieu tops himself in this work, providing a detailed and darned-near irrefutable explanation of the way schooling works in the real world. Don't be fooled by the fact that Bourdieu limits his analysis to the world of French higher education; the framework he develops can be used in any context.
Note: Bourdieu is well-known for being a difficult writer. "The State Nobility" is, moreover, probably his most stylistically-opaque work, even if most of his conclusions will resonate deeply with anyone who has encountered modern educational systems. If you're looking for clever turns of phrases or exciting prose, Bourdieu is not your guy. This is also not a good introduction to his thought--for that I'd go to "Pascalian Meditations" or "The Logic of Practice".
But if you want to understand how education actually reproduces social distinctions, this is the book. To those who despair of countering the usual economic social theories, put down your Foucault and Derrida and pick this up. Bourdieu does not pussy-foot around with half-baked theories of "power" or "textuality". He does not dance around the edges of the theories of the orthodox economists but confronts them head on. And, amazingly enough, he leaves them in shambles. "Rational Choice Theory" looks like a cheap parlour game once you've read Bourdieu.
